Today marks the 30th anniversary of the crash of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , a DC-8-63CF that went down shortly after takeoff from Gander International Airport in Gander, Newfoundland.
The flight was a charter, taking 248 members of the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division home to Fort Campbell, KY from a six-month peacekeeping deployment in the Sinai. All 248 passengers and 8 crew were killed in the crash.
A Canadian Air Safety Board investigation determined that ice contamination on the leading edges of the wings caused an increase in drag and reduction in lift that lead to an unrecoverable stall at low altitude. The accident remains the deadliest in Canadian history.

Also the single greatest loss of US military personnel in peacetime. And the last leg of their journey. Very sad.

I don’t remember where now, but I read a quote from one of the unit officers who had to make many of the notifications. He said something to the effect of “I’ve never heard so many screaming and crying women in my life.” That must have been unimaginably difficult.
